Neat Cutting oils are used in various machining operations like grinding, turning, milling, broaching, drilling, tapping, and gear cutting to provide cooling and lubrication. The type of base oil plays a major role in its performance. Group-I-based neat cutting oils still have the largest share in the global & Indian market. They are cheap but contain high sulfur and aromatics. This results in poor oxidation stability (reduced longevity of the oil), poor viscosity index (viscosity increases, high carryover losses, poor lubrication), and high evaporation & misting losses. Extreme pressure (EP) additives such as chlorine are added in traditional products to increase tool life, but these carcinogenic (cancer-causing) short-chained chlorinated paraffin have severe EHS concerns.
In an era of ever-increasing speeds and loads and mist & evaporation control challenges, the conventional mineral base oils are being replaced by superior base oils with higher saturated hydrocarbons & reduced sulfur contents. X-CUT®, X-HONE® neat oils are based on chlorine-free EP & GROUP II TECHNOLOGY. These are hydro-processed oils with high purity, and 99% saturates. In a three-stage process, the base oil is hydrocracked at very high pressure to restructure aromatic compounds with hydrogen into saturates & remove sulfur. Next, catalytic dewaxing (hydro-isomerization) improves saturation to creating more Isoparaffins. Lastly, at low temperature and high-pressure remaining aromatics are also saturated.
The usage of these hydrocracked group II base oils provides the basis of X-CUT®, X-HONE® neat oils' superior anti-oxidation properties, anti-wear properties, and reduced evaporation and misting losses. Chlorine-free extreme pressure additives provide excellent tool life without compromising the environmental norms and risks associated with conventional chlorinated oils.
